Are you looking for a new career path? One with opportunities for growth, and a chance to make a meaningful impact on someone’s life? Then Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) could be the career for you! People who have a passion for helping others may be interested in a rewarding career as a Behavior Technician (BT) – an entry level position in the field of ABA. BTs often work in health care, schools and in the community.
The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) projects a 23% growth in the field of ABA by 2030. This rate is significantly higher than the average for all professions, making now the perfect time to get into the field.
Here are some reasons to become a BT:
Transitioning to the career is simple
In most cases, in-house or on-the-job training is provided; there is no special knowledge or education required. Having a caring heart, great attitude, and a willingness to learn are the only requirements.
Career advancement opportunities and job security
There is nothing more rewarding and fulfilling than supporting children in building their life-skills, independence and confidence. As more people enter the fast-growing field of ABA, there are opportunities for career advancement. View BHW’s Career Pathways Program here.
If you have a caring heart, love children and value making a positive impact in people’s lives, this is a great career choice for you. Becoming a BT requires energy, creativity and dedication – and the reward of seeing each child and their family grow is priceless.
Flexible scheduling
If you are a student, or a parent, or simply have other obligations on your time, it can be hard to find a job that works around your schedule. Behavior BTs work with clients in sessions throughout the day, and BHW will match your availability to the client’s. Maybe you have classes in the morning and can only work in the afternoons? That’s perfectly fine, you can work with clients when they are home from school. Only want to work in the morning so you can be there when your kids get home from school? Not a problem, and our morning clients would love to have you.
No two days are the same
Sessions may be held in a number of environments, including an individual’s home, school, or community – or in one of BHW’s Care & Support Centers. You may be focusing on taking turns while playing a game, practicing selecting food while in a grocery store or ordering at a restaurant. In addition, protocols and methods of approach may change depending on goals. Whatever the scenario, BTs are never bored.
Job skills building
Beyond providing treatment, BTs have opportunities to grow professionally. Here are some skills that are developed and refined:
- Problem Solving
- Interpersonal Communication
- Interpreting Non-Verbal Cues
- Patience & Listening Skills
- Assessment Evaluating
- Data Collection, Tracking and Data Entry
